Stanford Blood Center Prepares for Super Bowl 50 by Appealing to Bay Area Donors

STANFORD, Calif.− Stanford Blood Center (SBC) is preparing for the estimated two to three million Bay Area visitors for Super Bowl 50 by asking donors to help stock the shelves with blood products ahead of the big game.

SBC is working with partner Stanford Health Care (SHC), a designated trauma hospital, to ensure their inventory is full to support the anticipated increase in patients they may see.

SBC has also connected with local law enforcement and SHC’s Office of Emergency Management, to establish a coordinated communication plan with the SHC Transfusion Services department, to ensure SBC is alerted and able to respond quickly to any urgent need for blood products.

“It’s the blood on the shelves at the time of need that helps patients,” notes Loren Magaña, SBC Spokesperson. “Many people don’t know it takes up to three days from donation for blood to be ready for transfusion. So we encourage the community to donate this week.”

Donors should be in good health with no cold or flu symptoms. They must eat well prior to donation, drink fluids and present their photo identification at the time of donation. The process only takes about an hour. Please call 888-723-7831 today, to make an appointment to donate this week.
