You will no longer be deferred for tattoos obtained in a California State regulated entity. At present, you will still be deferred for 12 months if you obtained a tattoo outside of California or in California in a non-regulated entity. However, on April 2, 2020, the FDA issued an updated guidance regarding blood donation deferrals for a number of risk factors, including tattoos, and has recommended this previous 12-month deferral be reduced to 3 months. While we are not able to implement this change immediately, our team is working to update our policies and procedures to this new guidance as soon as logistically possible. Please note that your tattoo must be healed, bandage removed, and no scabs or exposed wounds/bleeding present in the tattooed area. If you have any questions about your eligibility to donate with a tattoo, give us a call at 888-723-7831.
