Donating for Research

Stanford research donors have provided blood components that helped validate new tests to detect infectious viruses, develop tumor vaccines and develop new procedures to inactivate viruses in blood, to name a few. We partner with medical researchers at Stanford University, partner hospitals and throughout the U.S. to provide blood products that further medical knowledge and improve patient care on a regular basis. If you are otherwise healthy but deferred from donating for transfusions, we encourage you to consider donating for research!

If you are deferred for the following reasons, you may be a good candidate for research donation:

  • travel to malaria-risk region
  • immigration from malaria-risk region
  • residence in UK or use of bovine insulin/graft during a time that would put you at risk for vCJD (mad cow)

To learn more about the specifics of these deferrals, please visit stanfordbloodcenter.org/eligiblity.
