STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Blood Center will sponsor a Café Scientifique program Sept. 22 on the H1N1 strain of influenza.
Infectious-disease expert Arthur Reingold, MD, professor and head of the Division of Epidemiology at the University of California-Berkeley, will discuss the topic from 7 to 9 p.m. at the blood center’s Palo Alto site, 3373 Hillview Ave. Admission is free, and espresso and cookies are complimentary.
Café Scientifique is an international network of informal groups that brings scientific debate into local communities.
The H1N1 influenza strain appeared in Mexico and Southern California last spring and has since spread across the globe, causing a pandemic that is expected to worsen during the coming winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Reingold will provide an update on the clinical and epidemiological features of the pandemic, and discuss options for prevention and control.
Reingold, who is also on the faculty at UC-San Francisco, has devoted the last 25 years to the study and prevention of infectious diseases in the United States and in developing countries.
He regularly teaches courses on epidemiologic methods, outbreak investigation and the application of epidemiologic methods in developing countries, among others. He began his career as an infectious disease epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working there for eight years.
