STANFORD, Calif. – On Sept. 16, the Stanford Blood Center opened a new donor center in Palo Alto that also serves as its flagship location, housing operational and research labs, administrative and business management staff, and donor services.
The new building is at 3373 Hillview Ave., which is off of Foothill Expressway just south of Page Mill Road. All phone numbers and e-mail addresses for blood center employees remain the same. In addition to the Hillview site, the blood center will continue to draw blood at its two current locations: 780 Welch Road in Palo Alto and 515 South Drive in Mountain View. All three locations have new hours for donations.
Spokesperson Michele Hyndman said the new site will help the blood center keep pace with the increased demand for blood. The hospitals served by the center have needed about 10 percent more blood each year for the last three years.
The blood center also has a new logo. “The fresh look will complement our evolution into the state-of-the-art blood center we have become,” Hyndman said. “We’re going through tremendous growth and change, and we want a logo to reflect our progress.” The new design communicates caring, combining a heart and two drops that hold the heart like hands.
Blood donors who were on hand for the Hillview center’s first day of operations were impressed with the facility. “It’s beautiful. I especially like the new building smell,” said blood donor Roger Rehse.
A grand opening party for the Hillview site is scheduled for Nov. 5. Staff, donors and patients will be on hand to answer questions, and guest speakers will share stories of how blood donation saves lives in our community. More information is available at the center’s Web site at https://bloodcenter-stg.stanford.edu.
Donors may call (650) 723-7831 or toll-free (888) 723-7831 to make an appointment, learn hours of operation and get directions. Donors should be in good health with no cold or flu symptoms. They must eat well prior to donation, drink fluids and present photo identification at the time of donation. The process takes about an hour. For more information or to schedule an appointment online, please visit the center’s Web site.
