OAKLAND, CA, September 1, 2010 – On Friday, August 27, Fremont Police Officer Todd Young was shot in the line of duty. He required numerous transfusions during his initial surgery. Highland General Hospital, where Officer Young is being treated, encourages potential donors to contact local blood centers and schedule an appointment to give blood.

American Red Cross and Stanford Blood Center are hosting blood drives throughout the Bay Area so local officers and community members can show their support for Officer Young (list of Bay Area drives below). The Red Cross will be opening its four East Bay donor centers on Labor Day.

“During his initial surgery, Young required 60 units of blood”, Fremont police spokesman Bill Veteran said. “He is expected to need more procedures in the next few days and police are asking for donations to be made to the American Red Cross.”

Blood collected at these local drives will benefit Bay Area patients. Blood is needed by accident and trauma victims, premature babies, and patients undergoing treatment for leukemia and many other life-threatening diseases.

Cards of support will be available at Red Cross and Stanford Blood Center. Donors can sign the cards and they will be delivered to Officer Young and his family.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission) and meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

For more information or to schedule an appointment with the Red Cross, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.
