Clete A. Kushida, MD, PhD, Stanford Neurologist and Professor of Psychiatry, Medical Director of the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, and President of the World Sleep Federation, will be speaking at our upcoming Café Scientifique series, this Thursday, September 26. Please join us at our Palo Alto center from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
This Thursday, Dr. Kushida will share tips on recognizing common sleep problems and sleep disorders. He’ll also discuss treatment options, and offer advice to help you get a good night’s sleep.
A neurologist and sleep-medicine specialist, Dr. Kushida directs several NIH- and industry-sponsored research studies. His research focuses on topics including the physical features and neurocognitive changes associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, the epidemiology and treatment of restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement disorder, primary care sleep education/training, and countermeasures for sleep loss.
Dr. Kushida frequently publishes on these topics and weighs in on research studies involving sleep. Following a 2011 insomnia study covered by Stanford Medicine’s Scope blog, Dr. Kushida noted in a story published by CNN that insomnia seems to be on the rise, with about one-third of all U.S. adults experiencing weekly difficulties with nighttime sleep, and an estimated 50 to 70 million people complaining of associated daytime impairment. Dr. Kushida told CNN, “There appears to be more insomnia, given more work and family responsibilities, and more technological improvements and distractions. These result in more stress that can precipitate worsened sleep.”
Dr. Kushida was also the founding President of the California Sleep Society (2008-10), and is currently President of the World Sleep Federation, which reports that he authored or edited over 200 publications, including six books and the recently published 4-volume Encyclopedia of Sleep, for which he served as Editor-in-Chief.
